#9 September – Heading South

1/9/2020  Whitehaven to Shaw.

2,3/9/2020 Shaw to Roylen Bay Goldsmith Island. Bumpy ride wind against tide waves and lots of tacking.

4/9/2020 Roylen Bay to Brampton

5/9/2020  Stayed Brampton for walk up to lookout again.

6-19/9/2020  Nice sail to Mackay from Brampton . Whale swam beneath us . Stayed in Mackay for 2 weeks to wait out strong southerlies. Lots of trips to town on bus and out to eungella by marina hire car. Met some other yachties waiting on weather to head south.

20/9/2020 Mackay to Curlew 50 nm SE 15-20.Hairy entrance on eastern side due to shoals and tidal flow. Many Bulk Carriers waiting to be loaded.

21/9/2020  My birthday. Curlew to Hunter Island in the Dukes.38nm. E/SE 5-10,very pleasant.

22/9/2020 Hunter Island to Island Head 40nm .Very light winds and mostly motored. Lots of rafts of coral bloom. Long way into Island Head and sandflies +++. First problem with bugs in whole trip.

23/9/2020 Island Head to Great Keppel 59 nm arriving late afternoon and anchored off Monkey Beach in 18 kn NE.

24 + 25/9/2020 Stayed Monkey Beach and snorkeled off boat, walked up to lookout and around Fishermans beach.

26 – 29/9  Moved around to Leekes beach to get protection from Southerlies. Walked over to resort and Wreck bay via beautiful Butterfish Bay.

29/9 Sailed across to Rosslyn bay Marina.Usual jobs getting washing down and wash boat. Mark Olson on board for drinks and went off for dinner at nearby restaurant.

30/9 Borrowed Marina car and drove to Yeppoon, filled gas and sailed off by midday to Monkey Beach Keppel. Lovely moonlight night.
